Smart City Express: 47 Airports and 2 Heliports

AENA is in charge of the civil air navigation in Spain that involves the management of 47 airports and 2 heliports. In passenger count, AENA is the world’s leading airport operator. In fact, just the last month of November, AENA has served over 12,000,000 passengers.

That kind of volume requires a certain amount of reliability. For the control of its facility management system, AENA has standardized on Wonderware.

We will be featuring the Barcelona El Prat Airport in a success story video. While waiting, you can visit the following websites:

1,100 hours per year are saved at Fujirebio

Fujirebio makes biomarkers (i.e., blood tests) and its core competency is in the oncology area so its products are mainly centered around cancer testing. The product it manufactures annually is quite considerable.  At their Malvern, Pennsylvania plant, they produce about 75 million tests that are then distributed throughout the world.

The solution is completely paperless and provides electronic record collection with electronic signatures while maintaining 21 CFR compliance and ISO 9001 and 13485 certification

Tuesday, November 19, 2013

What makes the solution at Fujirebio unique?

What makes the solution unique? It is a complete paperless system with electronic records and electronic signatures on a regulated industry

The EMS provides us a way of archiving data and it allows us to trend the way that our equipment is operating to make sure it’s staying within specification and up to our standards.

Josh Zimmer
Quality Engineer

What makes the solution unique?

  1. It is a complete paperless system with electronic records and electronic signatures
  2. It generates18 Monthly Department Reports for “Review By Exception”
  3. It routes reports for review and approval via the Wonderware Workflow software

More information

In my next post, I will talk about what going paperless did for Fujirebio. In the meantime, you can check out the following:

Fujirebio: from a 15 hour review to just minutes

EMS is a is a complete paperless system with electronic records and electronic signatures

“At Fujirebio, we are looking to take advantage of our electronic systems. We installed the equipment monitoring system to electronically capture data from Fujirebio’s temperature-controlled areas. The new monitoring system also provides the company with a scalable infrastructure which we can implement other electronic data capture projects as we go forward.”

Mike Koch
Vice President, Supply Chain

A great start at Fujirebio

A major milestone was achieved at Fujirebio Diagnostics on July 1, 2013 when the manual paper-based process of periodically recording temperature readings for specific GMP-related equipment was officially replaced by a new computerized system.

“Before the EMS system went in, I was spending about 15 or more hours manually reviewing the GMP packs. After the system, I went from hours to minutes. The key benefits of the system are the electronic signatures with the review by exception, and not having to worry about missing papers or chart recorders. The system has just made my life a whole lot easier.”

Rachael Vinjamuri, Lead Manufacturing Document Analyst

Fujirebio: innovation always starts with an idea

A significant amount of time is spent each day manually reviewing reports

The creation of the Electronic Initiative at Fujirebio was triggered by a few challenges in the Pennsylvania plant, mainly on the following:
  • A significant amount of time is spent each day manually reviewing reports
  • The existing paper-based system was time-consuming and vulnerable to reporting errors

Coca-Cola Swaziland keeps operators informed

Coca Cola Swaziland Block Diagram

This project facilitated the first time measurement of metrics and when the first results were made available they came as a shock:  The Swaziland Electricity Company validated the results and found out that Coca Cola Swazialand achieved a discrepancy of less than 1%.

Once this was established, the organization completely bought into the system.

The Chinese Ministry of Railways value scalability

The large display of train arrival and departure is actually a Wonderware InTouch HMI screen

The Chinese Ministry of Railways knew that selecting a partner that could provide the technology to benefit the project over the long haul was critical. In fact, they selected Wonderware because of its ability to scale. They know that with Wonderware System Platform, the ministry could scale the enterprise solution, beginning with the Beijing Olympic line and extending it in stages to the entire nationwide high-speed rail network.

China's High Speed Rail - Operating in Harmony

Today, the Passenger Information System used throughout the High Speed Rail in China benefits from a unified management strategy and standardized technical architecture.

Before the China Ministry of Railways developed the plan that began with the high speed rail lines, its Passenger Information System was far from being integrated. Components were purchased from different manufacturers and did not operate well together. As a result, stations and terminals were not linked efficiently, creating inefficiencies in deployment, operations and maintenance.

China Rail: Integrating 60 third party products

The complex rail network involves the collaboration of more than 60 different third-party vendors for each station’s facilities management system.

The Wonderware System Platform solution implemented by Easyway for the China Ministry of Railways revolves around  what they call the Passenger Information System. It basically is a large scale, multi-site Facilities Management System that takes care of all the high speed line's train stations accross China. This involves a number of highly important  functions:
  1. Communications equipment monitoring, including the public address system
  2. Passenger and train information screens, displays and signage
  3. Automated ticket sales booths
  4. Closed circuit television monitors
  5. Safety systems.

China Ministry of Railways uses Wonderware

Facilitated by the implementation of 21st century technology, the world’s longest high-speed rail network operates on Wonderware System Platform. When the China railway system is fully completed in 2020, it will carry both passengers and goods and will be able to reach distances of 4,000 kilometers (2,500 miles) in less than a day.

Since ancient times, China has set the pace in terms of art, culture, science and engineering. With thousands of years of innovation and technology behind them, China’s population of over 1.3 billion people is on the move once more.

China has embarked on an ambitious course to provide high-speed rail service throughout the entire country. The first high-speed line was inaugurated during the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. Developed by the China Ministry of Railways, the new high-speed rail lines require a quicker turnaround,  facilitated by the implementation of 21st century technology.

Bermuda Electric: Evolution and Modernization

Part of BELCO's continous modernization also involved the use of Triconex® Tricon™ fault-tolerant controller, a key Invensys product.

In 1995, BELCO began looking for a solution that would ensure their facilities could operate consistently in the present plus provide a strong basis for future implementations. The company chose Wonderware® software products, starting with the InTouch® Human Machine Interface (HMI). Subsequent upgrades through the years saw the continuous upgrade to the newest InTouch version as new plants are put on-line and as new enhancements are added to the solution.

This constant evolution and modernization culminated in BELCO's use of System Platform. The addition of System Platform is a high point in BELCO's history as it provided provided a common, efficient and centralized infrastructure that helped them develop, maintain, control and manage applications with exceptional scalability, openness and ease. The arrival of the Wonderware Historian and recently of Wonderware IntelaTrac helped BELCO achieve ISO 14001 compliance, for its state-of-the-art production, transmission and distribution of electricity – the first organization in the territory to achieve this prestigious milestone!

Bermuda Electric and the importance of planning

In island locations like Bermuda, the design and maintenance of power systems can require more effort

This is the second post of a multi-part series on the success achieved by the Bermuda Electric Company (BELCO). In my previous post, I talked about how Wonderware software's reliability and ease of use helped BELCO be self sufficient and have the capability to provide a secure, reliable and sustainable electric power system. In this post, I'd like to talk about the importance of planning and how Wonderware helps in long term decision making, modernization and legacy migration.

In most areas in North America, electricity is an expected amenity. We almost take it for granted because we know that the infrastructure that creates and delivers power is reliable and solid. There are so many power plants spread out throughout the United States that the failure of one or two plants won't affect the supply of electricity. In island locations like Bermuda however where resources are limited, the design, operation and maintenance of power systems requires more planning and effort.
