Smart City solution delivers clean water

“We’ve created a totally integrated management system that control’s the city’s water and wastewater system, utilizing the latest technology to deliver affordable water and wastewater services to the citizens and visitors of Carson City.”

The scope of the Wonderware solution at Carson City is fairly large. Let's focus on the water and wastewater system in this post.

Water and Wastewater Metrics

The water and wastewater plants that are part of the Smart City solution at Carson City delivers 22 millions of gallons of water daily from 30 wells. It provides surface water treatment and processes 6.9 millions of gallons of wastewater a day.

A major part of the latest technology that James is talking about is of course, Wonderware software. Carson City has been a long time user of Wonderware InTouch. It all started in the summer of 1992, when Carson City Public Works started using InTouch to manage both the water purification and wastewater recycling systems. Since then however, the Water and Wastewater system at Carson City has modernized and expanded.

Modernization and Expansion through System Platform

Carson City has modernized to Wonderware System Platform and have moved their communication over a wireless infrastructure. This has enabled the engineers at Carson City to develop a solution that is run by tablets and mobile phones, in addition to the traditional control room and office based computers.

Workforce Enablement through Mobile Technology and SmartGlance

Talk about breaking the mold: the operators at Carson City now utilize iPad tablets and smart phones to establish secure sessions through a Sonicwall SSL-VPN connection. The plant control stations utilize thin clients for application control through the terminal server. The Wonderware Historian is used with the Historian Client, Information Server, and a SmartGlance application for data analysis.

I’ll explain all the details on how all these was set-up in my future posts. I’ll also be talking about the Solar Plants and Traffic Light Monitoring system that are all part of the Smart City solution.
